One of the first decisions couples make when finalizing their guest list is whether to include children in the celebration or keep it adults-only. While many weddings choose to be adults-only, we estimate that roughly a quarter of the weddings we’re hired for also welcome younger guests. When they do, planning matters as much for children as it does for adults.
Kids’ tables at weddings are an opportunity to create a better experience for everyone. Children feel included, and parents can relax; the celebration flows naturally without either group feeling overlooked.
At Jodi Raphael Events, we believe every guest should feel considered, no matter their age. Like all aspects of luxury wedding planning, welcoming hospitality starts with anticipating what people need before they ask.
Not Every Child Should Sit at the Kids’ Table
One of the biggest misconceptions is that all children belong together. In reality, age makes all the difference. While 2-5 years apart may not mean much in your 30s and beyond, it makes a huge difference with kids in elementary, middle, and high school.
Toddlers and preschool-aged children are usually happiest sitting with their parents. They’re too young to remain seated independently (patiently) throughout dinner and benefit from the familiarity of family nearby.
Older children often enjoy the independence of having their own table. Sitting with cousins and friends gives them a chance to socialize while letting parents enjoy dinner and conversation, knowing their children are close by. The goal isn’t simply to separate children from adults, but to create seating arrangements that make everyone more comfortable.
A Space Designed for Them
For weddings with several children in attendance, couples should think beyond a single table altogether. A dedicated children’s area during cocktail hour can be a wonderful addition, giving younger guests activities to enjoy while adults mingle nearby. Larger celebrations may even include an entire children’s lounge or activity room with games, crafts, movies, puzzles, or supervised entertainment designed specifically for different age groups. Now, these spaces don’t compete with the celebration; they simply become part of the overall guest experience.

Location Matters
Where you place the kids’ table makes a tremendous difference; children should feel connected to the celebration without appearing isolated from their families. At the same time, placing them directly beside the dance floor or entertainment can become overstimulating.
A good rule of thumb is to place the children’s table close enough for parents to check in easily while staying near the heart of the celebration. A location near the bar or cocktail lounge typically works well. Adults can socialize nearby while keeping younger family members within sight. Like any aspect of full-service wedding planning, small decisions often have the greatest impact on how comfortably the event unfolds.
Think Beyond Pizza Squares and Hot Dogs!
Most venues are happy to accommodate children’s menus, and younger guests shouldn’t feel like an afterthought at dinner.
Simple favorites like pasta, chicken tenders, sliders, fruit, and macaroni and cheese are a surefire way to keep younger guests happy while keeping service seamless alongside the adult meal. But these are just the core options and examples to work from. Hosts who know there will be kids with more developed palates should include other options, like poke bowls or a make-your-own taco bar!
A Better Experience for Everyone
One of the biggest misconceptions about kids’ tables at weddings is that they’re designed to entertain children, but their purpose is much broader. When children are comfortable, parents CAN relax. They linger longer over dinner and enjoy conversations they may not otherwise have if they’re constantly worrying about keeping little ones occupied.
As we’ve discussed in our articles, Luxury Wedding Checklist and Luxury Wedding Details, exceptional celebrations are rarely defined by one spectacular moment. Dozens of carefully considered decisions quietly shape the guest experience throughout the day. A successful wedding occurs when thousands of unseen details all work in unison.
