Boston is a destination city for tourists around the globe. It has a rich history woven through every street corner and distinctive neighborhood, and it has a long-standing association with education, innovation, and historic sporting events! If you are visiting Boston for the first time, you will find any number of ways to experience Boston’s character and charm.  And if you are seeking a unique location for your wedding, some of those very same qualities are what make Boston weddings so popular.

Why has Boston emerged as a much sought-after wedding destination? What sets Boston weddings apart from weddings in other cities?

In this article, we shed light on some of the most attractive features of Boston weddings, showcasing what our unique city has to offer!

Colonial Backdrops and Historical Venues

Settled as a British colony in 1630, you’ll find more colonial-era architecture than anywhere in the country. Boston is one of the very few cities that provides an unaltered experience of old New England with historical buildings within the Greater Boston area predating the country’s independence.

There are multiple wedding venues that honor and celebrate that history. This unique characteristic presents an opportunity to incorporate both the old and the new, everything that is Boston today. In the heart of the city, check out the Fairmont Copley Hotel, an iconic Boston wedding venue. And just outside Boston, you’ll find the Paine Estate, Codman Estate, and Lyman Estate, each with its own history and ambiance.

Even for those who aren’t history buffs, the beauty of colonial-era architecture found in every corner of the Greater Boston Area makes for a scenic and timeless backdrop for any wedding.

Views of the Atlantic Ocean and Boston Harbor

While getting married surrounded by historical architecture has a distinctive quality, as a city on the water, several Boston wedding venues feature breathtaking views of Boston harbor.

Within the city itself, the Boston Seaport District is home to the Boston Harbor Hotel with its grand, domed pavilion. At both the John F. Kennedy Library and the Institute of Contemporary Art, you’ll find two extraordinary settings accented by breathtaking water views.

Just outside the city, there are several water-side venues north and south of Boston. Coastal sites along the North Shore like Oceanview of Nahant or the Davenport Yacht Club boast beautiful views. To the south, Cape Cod and Newport, Rhode Island are home to distinctive wedding venues that are quintessential New England and easily accessible from Boston.

Foliage Season – The Magic of New England Fall

What do most people think of when they hear “fall in New England?” The foliage, of course! One can easily imagine the rolling Bostonian scenery draped in vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow; pumpkins joyfully lining the brownstone stoops of the South End or Back Bay; and of course, roaring fires and tasty spiced ales. Who wouldn’t love a Boston wedding that captures the charm of the New England fall season?

Boston comes alive with color from September through November each year, including the Boston Commons and Public Gardens. Located in that same neighborhood is newly renovated The Newbury Boston and The four Seasons Hotel, each with stunning garden views.

Getting Schooled

With over 45 colleges and universities in the Greater Boston Area, there is no shortage of public and private schools that offer striking wedding venues.

Harvard and M.I.T. each have grand ivy-clad buildings, chapels, gardens, and grounds available for weddings and receptions. One of our favorites is the Dane Estate at Pine Manor. For some, a college setting is a great opportunity to tie the knot at their alma mater! Others might prefer a private club like the University of Massachusetts Club, Boston College’s Connors Center, or the Harvard Club. All of these venues combine beautiful settings with a touch of history.
